Your baby at 32 weeks
Most babies are head-down at this stage, though some turn later. Toenails and fingernails are fully formed.
Breathing movements are frequent and rhythmic, drawing amniotic fluid in and out to strengthen the muscles used for breathing.
Lanugo is mostly shed, and the fetus has a substantial layer of fat giving the skin a smoother, less wrinkled appearance.
How you may be feeling
The uterus is high enough to press on the stomach and lungs, making large meals and deep breaths difficult. Small frequent meals usually work better.
Appointments often become weekly from around 36 weeks, but remain every two weeks for now in an uncomplicated pregnancy.
Common symptoms around week 32
- Difficulty eating large meals
- Breathlessness
- Frequent Braxton Hicks
- Pelvic pressure
- Trouble sleeping
Appointments and tests around now
Position is checked at appointments. If the baby is breech at this stage there is still time to turn, and options are usually discussed closer to 36 weeks.
What is normal, and what varies
Eating less at a sitting is normal now. There is physically less room for the stomach to expand, and smaller more frequent meals are the usual adaptation.
Worth doing this week
Eat small and often
Six small meals usually beat three large ones once the uterus is pressing on the stomach.
Pack the hospital bag properly now
Preterm labour is uncommon but possible. Having it ready removes one thing from an already stressful situation.
Finalise your birth preferences
Worth discussing at your next appointment while there is time to ask questions.
Looking ahead
Next week the bones harden further, except deliberately for the skull.
