The fetus is full term and complete. The brain and lungs have had the benefit of the final weeks, which is why 39 weeks is generally the earliest point elective induction or caesarean is offered without medical reason.
Skin is smooth and fat layers are in place for temperature regulation. The umbilical cord is around 50cm long.
The fetus continues gaining a small amount of weight daily.

Early labour signs may appear: a show, loose stools, backache, or irregular contractions that gradually become regular.
Weekly appointments continue, and a membrane sweep may be offered to encourage labour to start naturally.

A membrane sweep may be offered from around 39 to 40 weeks. It is uncomfortable but brief and can encourage labour to begin without formal induction.
What is normal, and what varies
Early labour can last a long time, particularly with a first baby, and is usually more comfortable at home. Being assessed and sent home is normal and not a wasted trip.
