First trimester

2 weeks pregnant

Still not pregnant, but this is the week it becomes possible. Ovulation typically occurs around the end of week 2 in a 28-day cycle, and the days leading up to it are the most fertile of the whole month.

Your baby at 2 weeks

A dominant follicle matures and releases an egg, which is swept into the fallopian tube. The egg remains viable for roughly 12 to 24 hours after release, which is a much shorter window than most people expect.

Sperm, by contrast, can survive several days in the reproductive tract. This asymmetry is why the fertile window is usually described as the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself — intercourse before ovulation is more likely to result in conception than intercourse after it.

How you may be feeling

Many people notice physical signs around ovulation: cervical mucus becomes clearer and more stretchy, resembling raw egg white, and some experience a one-sided twinge known as mittelschmerz. Basal body temperature rises slightly after ovulation has occurred, which is useful for confirming it happened but not for predicting it.

None of these signs are universal. Plenty of people ovulate regularly and notice nothing at all, and the absence of symptoms says nothing about fertility.

Common symptoms around week 2

  • Clear, stretchy cervical mucus in the days before ovulation
  • A mild one-sided ache some people notice at ovulation
  • A small rise in basal body temperature after ovulation has happened
  • Increased libido around the fertile window, which is common

Appointments and tests around now

If you are tracking, ovulation predictor kits detect the luteinising hormone surge that precedes ovulation by roughly 24 to 36 hours, which makes them more useful for timing than temperature tracking.

What is normal, and what varies

Ovulation timing shifts between cycles even for people with regular periods. Illness, travel, stress, and disrupted sleep all move it. A calendar prediction is an estimate, not a schedule.

Worth doing this week

Aim before, not after

Because sperm outlive the egg by days, the window before ovulation matters more than the day itself.

Use the fertile window, not a single day

Targeting one precise day adds pressure and misses more often than it hits. A spread across the fertile window is both more effective and less stressful.

Know when to ask for help

General guidance is to seek advice after twelve months of trying if you are under 35, or six months if you are 35 or over, and sooner if your cycles are very irregular.

Looking ahead

If an egg is fertilised in the next day or so, week 3 is when a pregnancy actually begins.
